During the medieval period, Bejaia was an important center under the Hammadid and Almohad dynasties. The city became known for learning, trade, science, and mathematics. It is also associated with the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, who studied in North Africa and later helped introduce Hindu-Arabic numerals to Europe.
