Discover the Sahara Around Djanet

Ancient Rock Art, Sandstone Landscapes, and the Golden Dunes of Erg Admer

Located in the extreme southeastern corner of the Algerian Sahara, Djanet is an important gateway to the dramatic landscapes of Tassili n’Ajjer. The region is known for its prehistoric rock art, sandstone formations, desert landscapes, and Tuareg cultural heritage.

The surrounding desert preserves evidence of a time when the Sahara had a very different climate. Ancient rivers, savannah landscapes, wildlife, and pastoral communities once existed across areas that are now covered by desert.

Your Djanet desert tour begins with a route through dramatic sandstone landscapes toward Tegharghart, home to the famous Neolithic petroglyphs known as The Crying Cows (La Vache qui Pleure). These remarkable engravings depict cattle and provide an important connection to the region’s prehistoric Green Sahara period.

The route then continues through wind-sculpted sandstone formations, including the distinctive Elephant Rock. Over time, wind and erosion have shaped the plateau into arches, pillars, cliffs, and other striking natural forms.

Later in the day, the landscape opens toward Erg Admer, an expansive sea of golden dunes. Your private 4×4 travels across the desert tracks and sand ridges before you have the opportunity to climb a dune and watch the Saharan sunset.

The experience continues into the evening with a traditional desert campfire, dinner, Tuareg tea, and time beneath the clear Saharan night sky before returning to Djanet.
