Discover the Ancient Roman Site of Tiddis

A Terraced Mountain Settlement Above the Rhumel Gorge

Dramatically built into the steep, ochre-colored cliffs of the Kheneg Gorge north of Constantine, Tiddis, known in classical antiquity as Castellum Tidditanorum, is one of the most distinctive archaeological sites in the region. Unlike the flat Roman grid found at Timgad, Tiddis was shaped by its mountainous surroundings. The settlement rises across several stone terraces connected by steep pathways and fortified routes cut into the reddish limestone slopes.

Originally established as an indigenous Berber settlement, Tiddis later became an important fortified outpost protecting the northern approaches to ancient Cirta. The site also has a remarkable religious history. Within its compact archaeological area are the Roman Forum and cistern systems, sanctuaries dedicated to Ceres and Vesta, and a rare subterranean sanctuary associated with the Persian mystery god Mithras.

As you climb toward the upper levels of the settlement, Roman civic remains give way to early Christian architecture. The site includes a fourth-century basilica and a semicircular baptistery with surviving mosaic fragments. Higher on the mountain slopes are ancient circular Berber bazinas, or stone funerary monuments, which predate the Roman presence by centuries.

With its mountain setting, archaeological remains, and panoramic views across the gorge and surrounding highland landscape, Tiddis offers a fascinating opportunity to explore Roman Numidia away from the larger archaeological sites.
