Discover the Ancient City of Madaure
A Historic Center of Literature, Philosophy, and Roman Numidia
Ancient Madauros, known today as Mdaourouch, was an important intellectual center of Roman North Africa. Located on the inland plateau of Souk Ahras province, the city became known for education, grammar, philosophy, and classical rhetoric.
Madaure was founded as a veteran military colony under the Flavian emperors and developed into an important center of Roman culture and learning. It was the birthplace and educational home of Apuleius, author of The Golden Ass, the only complete Latin novel to survive from antiquity. Saint Augustine also studied classical philosophy here during his formative years.
Unlike modern coastal destinations, Madaure offers a quieter archaeological experience surrounded by the landscapes of inland Algeria. The site is particularly known for its compact Roman theater, which was later incorporated into a sixth-century Byzantine fortress built using repurposed Roman stone blocks.
During your Madaure tour, you can explore the remains of the city’s Roman urban planning, including the central paved forum, judicial basilicas, thermal bath facilities, and ancient olive-processing installations. The archaeological site also contains early Christian basilicas and monumental stone mausoleums.
Together, these remains provide an opportunity to discover the scholarly, civic, religious, and agricultural history of Roman Numidia in one archaeological site.

A Curated Six-Hour Historical Route from Constantine to the High Plateau
Hotel Departure & Drive Across Eastern Plateaus (152 km)
Your personal chauffeur and English-speaking guide will meet you at your Constantine hotel. Settle into a comfortable, climate-controlled vehicle for the approximately 152 km drive east across agricultural plains, rolling wheat fields, and mountain valleys toward the archaeological site of Mdaourouch.
The Roman Theater of Madaure (20 min)
Begin your guided exploration at the Roman theater. Its compact semi-circular stone seating and intimate acoustic design make it one of the smallest theaters of its type in North Africa. The structure was designed for philosophical declamations, oratorical readings, and civic gatherings rather than large gladiatorial spectacles.
The Civic Forum & Classical Judicial Basilica (15 min)
Walk across the flagstones of the central Forum, the civic heart of ancient Madauros. Examine the stone foundations where statues of imperial patrons and philosophical benefactors once stood, and explore the remains of the judicial basilica where regional laws and municipal commerce were conducted.
The Roman Marketplace (Macellum) (15 min)
Continue to the preserved commercial area of the ancient city. See the remains of vendor counters, public weighing areas, and merchant arcades that served the local agricultural trade, including wheat, wool, and olive oil during the imperial period.
Early Christian Churches 1 & 2 (10 min)
Explore the remains of Madaure’s early Christian quarter, reflecting the city’s religious transformation during the fourth and fifth centuries. Walk along the former nave lines, examine the stone chancel rails, and see the foundations of the baptistery that was active during the period when Saint Augustine lived and studied in the region.
The Dual Thermal Baths (Summer & Winter Facilities) (10 min)
Walk through the public bathing complex of Madaure. Explore the distinct summer and winter bath areas, including hypocaust underfloor heating tiles, vaulted hot rooms (caldarium), and cold plunge pools designed for the seasonal climate of the high Numidian steppe.
Industrial Olive Oil Presses & The Byzantine Fortress (10 min)
Examine the large stone counterweights and collection vats of the ancient olive presses (torcularia), which were used to produce olive oil for trade across the Mediterranean.
Next to the Roman remains stands the imposing Byzantine fortress, erected in 534 AD by the forces of Emperor Justinian. The fortress was constructed using repurposed stone columns and blocks from surrounding Roman structures.
The Ancient Stone Mausoleum (10 min)
Finish your archaeological walk at the monumental stone funerary tower on the edge of the ancient city. Examine its classical masonry and carved commemorative inscriptions while taking in views across the surrounding plains before returning to your vehicle.
Relaxed Return Drive to Constantine Hotel
Relax in the comfort of your private, climate-controlled vehicle as you travel back across the plateaus toward Constantine. Enjoy direct drop-off at your hotel or preferred evening destination.
